Before you arrive to the Ängelsberg railway station you can observe the sign MC-service.  What Sweden needed at this time was light, which could give light to the dark living houses, which were common in the early 1800. Give a thought to what the only which was used was open fire. Or the so called torch, used in mines kept between teeth. This made that front teeth were soon worn. The Americans learned to dig for oil and when this was done the prize was reduced drastically. What people needed was kerosene in order to get light.  The Swede Per Åhlund created, from a cause we don't closely know, the factory on the little island. It was placed here when it was dangerous to extract kerosene as it easy could start burning. This never happened as far as we know. Once a ship with oil from Pennsylvania exploded in Stockholm and the cargo oil which was destined for oil island to go through destillation. This was not good for Åhlund´s production. Everybody know about Pennzoil.
Åhlund succeeded to learn how to distil the crude oil and in this way during different temperatures get different oils. The first he got was kerosene. This happened 1875. The factory was in use up to 1927.

The light had come to Swedish living houses on the country side. You can go to oil island with guided tours from Ängelsbergs railway station. Parking is arranged nearby and a special only for mc cycles.  With the transporting boat Petrolia you will come to the island in a secure way. Here you can be met by the old distillation master who for a long time lived at the island. The works mainly consist of a large heater which was fired by wood. Here the oil was pouring in the pipes which made the oil thin and flow light. The oil was distilled at different temperatures.  The return travel over the narrow water passage with Petrolia show also the old house build by a wealthy person that day. Today it's owned by a Canadian company and used once a year for festivity.
