Iron produced from the Skottvång ore can be found all over the world in the form of casted guns. They were placed in all kinds of defense constructions in the form of forts or installed in war ships. The ore was delivered to the gun foundry factory in Åker, some km north the mine. This foundry had got the Royal Seal. For this purpose a double furnace had been built. This because, so large amount of melted iron was needed for one gun. One gun shown in top picture. Åker of course was outclassed by Bofors when they started to deliver guns in forged steel in the beginning of 1900.
In Skottvång ore was extracted already in the beginning of 1500 and there is documented activities from the end of 1500. The mine was closed 1921 mostly because of bad supply of ore. In this time the official cause was that the mine was emptied. Today with new methods it can be opened again. The ore type was magnetit, which means it is magnetic. This is a special type and can easy be sorted. (Compare Flogberget mine). For the disadvantage of Skottvång there were difficult to get power. In the beginning so called cattle paths were used with horses or oxen. Then water power was built and flat rods were constructed. Beside the mine also a steam machine was built up. During 1900 electricity was installed. The mine got several new head frames depending on were ore was extracted below zero level. After the end of fireing against mine walls, gunpowder started to be used during 1800. After this blast oil, even called nitroglycerin or dynamite. It was during this period that the mine got it's deepest part with close to 345 m.
The ore which earlier had been extracted was taken care of 1920. This left over ore was immersed in water. Ore became in this way darker and it was easy to sort this out. A large amount of ore could be taken care of  and all of it was sent, by the new railway to Åkers Styckebruk.
After that the mine was closed down and  was let alone up to 1950 th.
The family Lars Serrander became interested  for the area and started to clean up the main center of the mine area. Here the old mine center changed to a destination of an excursion. Today there are a restaurant, café and marked trials. A small mine museum is built up beside the mine head frame. This was not open at my visit.
