I have driven along road 55 towards Malmköping several times when making visits to many veteran museums. I have also been interested in iron production and visited those places.

The sign Björndammen foundry has also been a coming place to stop at. This happened first time 2011 and 2012. In 2013 there was a guard standing on the small road down to the foundry and it was much people there. But I was on my way to Gråfors collections in Sparreholm. May be a stop on the way back?

Between the two lakes Vårsjön and Ältaren there are calm today, a small water fall. With the help of power from this water. Here a foundry was established 1637. The 30 years war was still going on and ended. Peace treaty 1648.

The ore came from Starrsätters mines and pig iron was delivered to the hammers at Nykvarn where the iron was refined.

The foundry we can see today was built 1800 by the baron  Knut Kurck with the nickname "the revolutionary". He had his own ideas how to build this foundry.

He designed this foundry as an Italian basilica. This word was Greek and alludes to a law book, but it was apprehended as a pompous and important building, where people were gathered.

For example cathedral or the Kings Hall. The word with this meaning arose in Rome during year 300.

In this building there is a foundry and a rust oven of Westman type. Around this foundry there are 4 columns built in Jonic style. These columns are aimed to take the weight of the middle part.

It was soon realized that the amount of water from Vårsjöns was too little and the access was unsure.

In order to take care of this problem a steam engine was installed 1870. This coincided with French - German war and the high economic situation. Later in the end of 1800 the so called "Iron factory death" started and the production decreased dramatically.

Note. This death was depended on the fact that all foundries were suited for hammers. They made the steel possible to forge plate/band and rods. The new technic using rolling demanded larger iron melt. The way to produce forge iron now instead used Thomas or Bessemer  methods. This gave enough with melted forgeable iron each time.  All small hammer owners of course didn't like this, because of no money to invest.

The foundry of Björndammen was not closed because of business activity, instead the ore from Starrsätter mines ceased 1883.

The first trial to save the old Foundry started 1998. 2013 a community started by people in the small village in order to save this building. This was the second trial. There aim was to save  this culture building and also the decay of the foundry. They also arranged the Björndammen Foundry day once a year. Between private visits the Björndammen foundry sleeps it's "Sleeping beauty", while water is dripping from the roof.
