After 3 floors at NSU Museum without escalators, it felt nice to slide down in our transport car, light on the upholstery and close your eyes a little. It was only about 5 miles to Porsche in Stuttgart so this was not much of it.
At the last roundabout in Stuttgart, we missed the exit and ran straight ahead. However, it was not any problem for Tord turned at the next cross street, and back to the impressive roundabout. The actual Museum building which we saw was a very modern architecture. See pictures in the link.
Porsche must have earned a lot of money for this was something you can't imagine.
On 20 april we drove down inte the parking basement visitors.

On the way up to the entrance a parking ticket was resolved  and then an elevator one floor. When we came into the hallway as small images are showing on the left.

At the nice white cleaned tables we struck us down. There was a lot of people who came and went. We were probably the absolute oldest when most were adolescents, school classes and middle-aged groups.
Now we had to see where to start. A very long escalator with vigorous tilt, went up to the top floor. One would then go in circles down to see the whole museum.
The escalator we stepped into the adventure  of Porsche race car now began. (cont. page 2)

Museet ligger strax utanför Stuttgart i ett område som heter Zuffenhausen.
Dr Ing. Ferdinand Porsche levde under den lyckliga tid då stora konstruktörer kunde få utlopp för sin kunskap. Hans första uppfinning var en elektrisk motor som var inbyggd i hjulen på en bil 1897. Lohner-Porsche. Man hade ju inte så mycket till motorer i slutet på 1800-talet. Tyvärr var inte den elektriska styrtekniken tillräckligt utvecklad så konstruktionen fick inget stort genomslag på konsument marknaden. Ferd. tog dock ofta fram sitt "barn", framförallt till militära projekt under WWI.
Fram till 1936 hade han varit inblandad i ett flertal konstruktions objekt. T.ex. Mercedes Benz SS och SSK kompressor och ett antal prototyper, t. ex. NSU, som skulle leda fram till prototypen på VW kallad Porsche type 60, 1936.
Det var nu han fick uppdraget att ta fram en folkbil till det Tyska folket.
For this, he opened his, 1931, construction firm in Stuttgart and in a simple garage the first VW was built. Later Mercedes Benz built 30 prototypes. These were given to SS for evaluation during Ferd's management. Until sept. 1939 built a factory was built in Wolfsburg where this car would be manufactured. Unfortunately, the war came between them and his talent was utilized in the Empire's service. Among the more famous products Porsche was involved in is the generation of the famous battle wagons of type Tiger, Panther and jeepmodellen Kübelwagen. Not to forget the "people's Car" which was Volkswagen. Sweden has in 1990 century bought the successor to Panther. Museum management believes apparently that these constructions are not something to show in a Museum. The contents of the Museum are almost 100% racing cars from gatrace to super prototypes. Not very similar to the old Museum, but the name is commited.
His son and grandson continue to drive the Porsche factory. Ferd. Porsche died in 1951.

When you see this horse trailer similar railcar from 1898 the first time, you might wonder if not horse arms missing. But on closer look, you will see that the rear contains anything that is not related to such. This was Ferdinand Porsche's first construction since the age of 24, he was hired by the Imperial Wagon Factory Lohner in Vienna. This idea to an electric-powered trolley, he had already in the past and certainly is that he pondered over its construction during his train trip to the Lohner factory. Cart powered by a centrally located electric motor with integrated differential gear by Porsche's design, which on its shaft has a gear at each end and operates corresponding positioned in the wheels. Steering was by horse cart type.
The engine shown below called octagon because of its eight-sided construction. It was designed later, but the principle was already done..
It was actually the 8 coils. The engine gave ca 3-5 HP and with a 550 kg heavy battery pack could the car run in 25 km/h in about 6 hours.
Braking was done with a mechanical brake as well as electrically and the speed was controlled with a 12 step controls.

Motor caravan was test driven by VEAG, Vienna Electric AG. The wagon was used on several occasions during test runs by Ferdinand Porsche in Vienna. The trials ended in 1902 and the car was put aside. It is not restored and displayed in its original condition. Car types with driven wheels of an octagon motor came around 1902. Lohner was interested to sell the type with gas engine-generator and electric power to pay Porsche's expensive experiment. This was notwhat  the Porsche was interested in his new constructions slowed down and he was looking for new jaob at Austro Daimler 1906, where he was hired by Emil Jellinek.

Porsche's ideas with electric drive were taken up during WWII when construction of the tank, which was named Tiger. This stroller weighing over 60 tonnes. Sufficiently powerful engines were not to avaiable. Testing s were made instead with 2 Maybach V12 with a total of about 1400 ps, which ran a generator and electric motor. Unfortunately a gearbox strong enough never was produced. One reason was that he used straight whel gears. Henschels draft Tiger wagon became the one that was in serie production.

Porsche's luxury car Bergmeister, which not came to bemanufactured in Austria Daimler Motoren. This type was produced in 50 copies, and total was 2600 ADR vehicles produced. However, one can imagine that he took this car as model when Mercedes cars of the 500 series were developed. Ref. 1.

The motor that Porsche was building, now employed by the Austrian Daimler motoren Gesellschaft. This engine replaced the normally used rotary engines which only gave a maximum of 130 HP. A variation on this was mounted in Goering's Fokker when he landed in Sweden. Previously had an Albatross landed in Sweden. The plane and engine were sent to the SW making a copy. Ref. 1.

Porsche got through their parents ' efforts to study at a business school in Reichenberg, and also studied in the new science of electricity. The subject was his favorite subject.
After this he was sent to Vienna to study at the Technical University. Some time thereafter, he got work at United Electric Co. That was owned by Brown Boveri. In this position he had just supervisor school to refer to and as such got start as a student to clean and lubricate the production equipment. After a while he was moved to expreiment part and soon his capacity was realized with the appointment Director of Test Department.Here Porsche made his electric-powered car after having constructed an electric motor. His next project was the gas engine equipped car that drives a generator which gave power to his electric motor.

While Lohner did marketing these cars and get back money on investments that Porsche's constructions called, got tired Ferd. Porsche and took an offer from Emil Jellinek in Austro Daimlermotoren. Austro Daimler had large series of cars at the time which was Porsche's ideas about a people's car. He deceived himself, however, and the first car which was redesigned was Jellinek construction from 1907 and devoted to the Austrian military. It was given by Jellinek name Maja, one of his daughters ' names. CF. the name Mercedes. This car like Porsche did to a useful with own 4 cyl engine, had been produced in 150 ex. all växellådsproblem. It brought later to Jellinek was Austro Daimler. 1916 received an honorary doctorate of Porsche at the University of Vienna.
The market, however, was not rready for mass produced cheap cars and Daimler continued to produce big expensive cars that generated a lot of money. His ideas about a small car found no interest on the part of the company's Board.

He changed employers again 1923 to the parallel company Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft, which formed in Stuttgart who had also been started by the Daimler family. Here came the famous car and racing cars types which had 7.1 litre Mercedes SS and SSK 1928, which came from Porsche's pen as origin. A small car at 1280 cc was produced and 30 prototypes were built, but were closed down.
This was the last straw and Porsche moved again, now to Steyr in Austria. The company J.F. Wendl had earned much money during WWI and put them now on a small car. Here he constructed his first small car with swing axles and torsion bar type in Austria. But the stock market crisis of 1929 made that Steyr was taken over by Porsche's old employer Austro Daimler and became the Steyr-Daimler-Puch. Now  Porsche had to start his own design firm, 1930 he was regarded as an insecure employees.
This agency he founded, together with his brother-in-law Dr. Anton Piëch. 12 design engineers joined the company in Stuttgart. Old employees followed him. It was Karl Rabe, who became chief designer, Erwin Kommenda with responsible for coachwork, Josef Zahradrnik took care of axles, suspension and steering. Karl Fröhlich took care of the gearbox and Josef Kales and Franz Reimspiess designed engines, Rosenberger was economist and budget expert in the gang.
Karl Fröhlich constructed in the late 1950 's the so-called Porsche syncronized gearbox. This was first introduced on all gearboxes for racing cars. The design was so good that it was mounted in most standard cars on the market.
The situation was now ready to seriously begin with Porsche small cars idéas. But in addition to this, he would also create a sports car to earned money.
In the expectation that Hitler would take over and WW2 would generate local money to the company now worked with commissions from various motorcycle manufacturers who wanted to try their luck in car production. (cont. page 4)

From Steyr to Wanderer.
Porsche's first real work with a folkbils construction became in Steyr, got an abrupt ending (see above) and he had to start his construction firm. In the firm, he had his patent from 1931 on separate suspension and suspension with torsion bar. This gave a fixed income which was what he needed.
At about the same time wanted to build a race car and the Wanderer man had agreed with Porsche at the 1931 Paris Motor Show about this. Read about this below.
Ferd's first contract after he started his design firm in Zuffenhausen was to develop a 6 cyl. car for Wanderer and Horch. It was given internal designation Porsche Type 7.
With the money from the patent and  from Wanderer project he immediately began a small car construction called the type 12.
In september 1931, came the Manager of Zündapp, Dr. Fritz Neumeyer to Porsche with a request to build a small car. Porsche, which was prepared for the visit, turned on the paper for type 12, as he had prepared and came with a long description of this design. See picture.
About Zündapp and project 12.
Zündapp which had been stuck for a 5 cylinder radial engine, placing in the rear of the car with traction of the rear wheels. This proved disastrous with poor cooling. Management also decided after calculation of costs, that the project would be shut down. Of the prototypes produced no survived WW2. The last two were destroyed during an air raid over Stuttgart 1944. The cars currently are replicas manufactured long after the war.
NSU and project 32.
It was obviously a difficult blow for Porsche, but at the same time he received the visit 1933 of NSU director Fritz von Falkenhayn. President between 1930 and 1945. He was the son of General Erich von Falkenhayn, who was Chief of General staff in Germany during WWI.
NSU wanted to expand its production of a small car. Porsche now took up basically the same proposal as Zündapp had received. He insisted, however, that one should follow more closely the Porsche main construction with 4 cyl air cooled engine mounted in the rear, as well as suspension according to Porsche's pantent.
NSUand kleinauto problem.
3 prototypes, called the type 32 was similar to that of Zündapp. 2 copies were built out of wood and 1 in steel. This has been a great discussion on the net what it was and how they looked. Only the "steel the car" remains. See picture.
NSU had in the beginning of 1930 been forced to go into partnership with Fiat because of bad economy during the depression. While Porsche worked to improve the prototype NSU began to get cold feet when they counted on costs to get a car into production. In addition, the Fiat laid a veto when agreement not to produce competing cars/vehicles against Fiat. This ended with the NSU laid down car project and instead focused on a MC "for the people". NSU Quickly. Porsche had again failed to bring his idea of  "people's car" through to production. Now it was the economic crisis in Porsche Design.
Solutions about people's car.
Now it was 1934 and Hitler had not yet assumed power.
In this location there was a Mercedes salesman Jakob Werlin. He had sold a 60 HP Mercedes to Nazi party 1923. Since that time, he was familiar with Hitler, who also trusted and took the advice of Werlin at regular intervals. Hitler never drove the car and probably had not run licens, but believed that a car of the people was a major trust issue in Germany, which he discussed with Werlin.
Werlin oppens for contract with Hitler.
Werlin and Porsche had met at the time they were working on Mercedes. Through this he knew about Porsche's ideas about a people's car. He decided now to meet Porsche and to discuss Hitler's idea of a people's car. This discussion became heated when Porsche thought Werlin was trying to steal the design ideas. Therefore discussed mainly the people's car project. It was agreed that Porsche would put hisideas on paper and then would Werlin present it for Hitler.
Now it became busy days for Porsche. He laid out the principles of this project and used a modified drawing/design fromhis previous Zündapp and NSU project.
Meeting with Hitler.
On 17 January 1934 came this meeting with Werlin and Porsche had the opportunity to presen his ideas. The meeting with Hitler took place later at the Kaiserhof  Hotel in may 1934. here Porsche's notes were discussed  with Hitler over a cup of tea. It turned out that they both get along well. Perhaps because they came from Austria, both from a smaller towns. With regard to opinins over the construction, there were several things that Porsche could not accept. But this allowed Porsche to fall as if someone could produce his car so imust be Hitler. Porsche's big problem was that Hitler wanted the car would cost under 1000 Rm. It would also be easy to maintain a speed of 100 km/h.
RDA wanted to be one of the leaders.
Now came the RDA Reichsverband, explained Deutsche Automobil Industrie into discusion. To this Covenant, all cars employees connected. They did not like about this employ competition. To prevent project they set up several requirements that Porsche had difficulties to satisfy.
At last "ein klein auto order".
Finally Porsche got an order in June 1934 to produce 3 prototypes. When the protypens design was accepted Porsche had to produce 3 within 10 months.
This was impossible as Porsche had no premises for this. It became instead so that Porsche rebuilt his double garage in his villa in Killesberg outside Stuttgart. The delivery time was impossible but Porsche kept a good face.
History about type 60.
This series of prototypes was designated Type 60. Series 2 was covered V1 and a cabriolet known as V2. V1 was closely tied to the NSU model type 32. It was equipped with a 4 cyl boxer mounted in the back. Moreover, there were about 20 different engines that were up for discussion. The first was a variation on an Austro Daimler aircraft engine from 1912 that Porsche originally had constructed. Moreover, he tested the 2-stroke engines and a radial engine. The radial engine was surely the one Zündapp had suggested in the Type 12, in improved condition. Porsche made a 2 cylinder 2-stroke boxer not proved strong enough. He also made another 4 cyl 4-stroke boxer. These had big problems till  Franz Reimspeiss constructed  the finally engine. The chosen became a 4 cyl 4-stroke boxer engine. Both V1 and V2 the cars had bodywork made and covered with metal plates.
Prototypes starting to be notified.

After 10 months the Porsche got extended production time of the 3 V1 and V2 the cars through Hitler's. Especially of the convertible model, see pictures when Ferd. takes Hitler having laid the foundation stone of Autostad factory. See picture of the stone in the Reimspeis link.
Type 60 was eventually approved by the RDA and it was decided to build another series of 3 copies. These were called for V3. They were also built in Porsche's garage. 2 of these were constructed with bodywork of wood with the third got the steel body. This steel bodywork was built by a body shop. Much assistance was taken by external firms. This version had like old suicide doors. The lamps were moved onto the fenders. These cars were delivered to RDA in oktorber 1936. But the former had Porsche thoroughly tested the entire total of 3500 miles.
RDA testing the V3 cars.
The cars were  internally from now on called for Volkautos. They was tested 435 miles daily. However, no testing at night. The problems noted by the RDA's Director Wilhelm Vorwig was above all crankshafts that broke and that the mechanical brakes defaulted several times. Later switched production of crankshafts from cast to forged and now the problem was solved. Electric fuel pump was replaced by mechanical. Some mishaps were caused by road accidents and collisions with wild animals raised in the reports were the most a rest from RDA's negative attitude. The final report in 1936 were in any case that Wilhelm suggested a number of cars would be produced under better conditions than in a garage.
Porsche penelty to Tatra.
As regards the design had the Porsche patents for torisions spring, but not the swing axle rear. It belonged to Rumpler. However, Porsche V3 had too many similarities with the Tatra 570. Porsche was later opted for the design steeling of the Tatra, but due to war and the takeover of Tatra it was put  down. This issue was raised after the war 1960 and Volkswagen was convicted to pay DM 3 million 1961 in penalty. Note that Porsche had worked with Ledwinka and Steyr.

Hitler misstänkte att RDA och dess ledare Wilhelm von Opel ville förhindra Folkbilen att tillverkas. DAF (Deutsche Arbeitsfront) fick ta över ansvaret för testningen. Dess ledare var Dr. Robert Ley som satte upp en organisation kallad Gesuvor för att hålla i fortsatt testning av bilen. Allt detta var klart i maj 1937.

With the new organisation had Porsche no more financial problems then all expenses were managed by DAF. He could instead fully concentrate on the car's design. DAF ordered 30 cars that would be manufactured by Daimler Benz. Hitler now had settled his power in Germany so any resistance no longer existed vis-à-vis the project. The cars got a serial number. The first car was built in Porsche garage got number 111A-37000 and following cars of Daimler Benz got up to 111A-37029. The cars were now even more Type 1 similar with light in the fenders. The testing began in april 1937 and lasted until december. During this time was running the cars sammanlgt 800000 miles.
The design of the car is getting better.
Erwin Kommenda developed the final design of the bodywork. The car got the whole hood forward, lanterns in the fenders, 2 rear windows and air intakes for the engine cooling. The wheels got the capsules. We know, however, is not so much how the car detail terms changed during this period. The body became even more like the definitive 1938, when bumpers, hood and running board was monted. How the Interior changed is not known.
The problem to get money for the factory in Autostadt (Vallersleben).
1938, the Dr. Robert Ley presented the proposal that all Germans who wanted to buy rhis car could save for their Kdf-wagen, which it was called. They would save RM990. It registrades through brands that were pasted in a sparbok. When it was full, they could pick up a new Kdf-wagen. 336638 Germans had saved RM 267 millions in Worker's Bank. Now came the war between them and German currency collapsed after the war, in which case nobody got any car. First, 1960, by court order, the survivors were offered a discount at RM 660 buying a Volkswagen (as it is now called) for RM 4000.
Where did all the prototypes went?
One wonders where all the prototypes went? We know that many were sold to approved Nazis. It was produced in 1938 44 copies  prototypes that  also were sold to the same category of persons. On the Web, it has been much discussions about various strange VW's, entered with many differnent bodyies. Probably rebuilt prototypes that have come into civilian hands and been converted into vans after the war. The need for cars after WWII was enormous.. Even the English occupying troops got VW cars for their service.This theory is as good as any other.

Porsche Prototype 1932 (NSU). This prototype built by NSU is a model of VW V3. Motor suspension and front and rear was Porsche's patent. With 1470 CC air-cooled 4 cylinder boxer, with the tail motor, 28 HP, 100 km/h is very similar to the VW V3. Ref. 1.
Text to the NSU prototype. The car had been stored during the war in a castle in Germany, and which was found by a disabled former engineer at NSU, damaged in the war. He bought the car cheap, changed battery and filled the petrol, and got it up and running. Several series of test cars were produced. Porsche was first commissioned to produce 3 St., which according to earlier were two built in wood and steel. Then it was 30 pieces of Mercedes and then a further 44. On the net, it's a lively discussion about cars on the picture with similar bodies. It is located near at hand that this was selling test cars rebuilt by new owner of more modern appearance for sale.

At the Paris Motor Show Porsche took contact with 1931 Wanderer on the design of a racing car. Agreed about this. However, it was so that the NSU, DKW, Wanderer and Horch had very bad economy and decided to join together to form Auto Union. Their brand became the four rings representing the four cars. Read about DKW.

Ferd. was a very determined man, so when he took an assignment he wanted to sit in the Board during the time. We have now come to 1932. Porsche did not know if his contract with the Wanderer would be completed, but nevertheless worked on for his own money. When the Auto Union was formed followed this contract with. It was the beginning of Auto Union race car but that he knew it. He also had his construction princips, which was his "children". Torsions Springs, swing axle transaxle (VW type 1) and position of the engine in the back.

This was a concept he followed the rest of his life. However, we know that it was professor Rumpler had a patent on the swing axle and transaxle. Already in 1921, he had built the so called Rumpler Tropfenwagen, built in approximately 200 copies. This with the engine in the back had Mercedes, with Max Wagner previously constructed a racecar, which (also) called for the Benz Tropfenwagen 1923, when Porsche worked there.

In the newly formed Auto Union resided outside of August Horch also Baron von Oertzen, former ceo of Wanderer. He realized that if there would be any speed on the new car company, you must have a "show piece". It would be a race car.

At the same time, Hitler had come to power and wanted something to show off to the world. Such a thing was winning Grand Prix races with race cars. At the Berlin Motor Show Hitler had spoken and laid out what he wanted the German industry would show. It was among other things a race car and the people's car (Volkswagen). For the development of a race car, he was prepared to support with 500000 reichsmarks per year. While this industry struggle was going on Porsche presented a car according to the recipe Tropfenwagen.
The engine became a V16 on 4370cc 295 HP at 4700 rpm with a max torque at 2700 rpm. Already 2 weeks after von Oertzen had asked Porsche if he wanted to continue with the previous contract with the Wanderer, he could in the face of Auto Union Board launched its racer project called type 22. He started a new company for this in November of 1931 in which he staked 30000 reichsmarks.

It would have independent suspension both front and rear. Until it became a side lying torsions axis according to later VW Type 1 and rear swing axle with transverse leaf spring walking, as well as friction dampers. This was the home of course, but it pointed out that the budget was severely limited.

This money would be throughout the project time Auto Union Achilles heel. Now, the Porsche set up his "boys" to senior positions and work started in Zwickau, where Horch and DKW facilities low. Already in November 1933, one could go into Nürnburgring for the first trial run.

The driver that had been provided was Hans Stuck and he was an old work colleague during Porsche Mercedes time. Other names that figures were Willy Walb and Eberhorst Eberan. 1934 made this race team a successful debut.

At the same time, there were trouble within the Executive Group and Walb was moved to Wanderer to produce the equivalent of the BMW 328. Eberan Eberhorst came out of favour with Feuereissen Walbs successor, but managed to retain his position. Porsche's services were reduced and slowed soon after 1935, while he had been commissioned to develop the People's car . Now Auto Union was on its own, with a limited budget and the detailing design of the car continued, while Mercedes was given access to all the money that was needed to their silver willows.

One should understand that 1935 season for Auto Union were not so successful. Now remained only to fine and precise car during the next competition seasons. The first car was called the drawing terms of type 22, when they built it, for type P-wagen and as ready for Auto Union type A. 1934 came B-model and 1935 the ready-developed C model. Now had it 6 litres and 520 HP at 5000 rpm.

Notes on the accounts. Eberan von Eberhorst survived the war and worked together with Porsche's son Freddy to construct Cisitalia Formula 1 car. This was the very one of the last constructed Audi cars as well as the Porsche 360. For the money bought Ferd. Porsche free from prison in France. Now started WWII and everything came to a halt. However, it was worked until 1943 with type E. Cars were hidden at secret locations as Mercedes made with Silver arrows. 12 to 18th Auto Union cars were run down in a salt mine outside of Zwickau, where they were hidden in a rock shelter. Now nothing would happen until 1945. The border between the fighters by the end of the war just went between Chemnitz and Zwickau.

But the Americans withdrew and the salt mine ended up with the Russians. It was close to the cars ended up in the West.

Porsche, egines and constructions.

Force and power.
A good engine requires two essential things. Strength and power. In the two turbo fed Porsche has set a standard for decades. With model 917 has since 1970 's run at the racetrack and with the 911 turbo reigns on the roads since 1975.
Both represent milestones in the company's history that control how to design and build cars. It has long been a pioneer in the creation of lightweight structures. Porsche created/challenged with creating powerful and light eneheter that this had advantages for competitions.
Model 917 got 560 HP with a maximum cylinder capacity of 4.5 litres. Equipped with two specially designed turbo chargers and with 12 cylinders in 180° boxer, the engine developed around the 1200 ps. When it comes to sports carsfor the road the Crown Jewel is Porsche's 911 series. Thanks to continuous development, ingenious combinations of new technologies, has the word "turbo" soon become synonymous with Porsche. These engines generates great power even at low rpm, which used to be the scourge of turbos. It was a tricky issue, but Porsche's engineers solved it by installing a valve with the name wastegate. This diverted gases and brought the "turbo code" back to the past. Strong-stronger-it is Porsche.
